Amatikulu Nature Reserve S 29º 6’ 53.316” E 31º 35’ 49.415” is roughly a 45 minute drive from the King Shaka Airport. The reserve is a rare, unspoiled piece of nature. See wildlife on the forested dunes overlooking the sea. Canoe, fish or swim on the Amatikulu and Nyoni River estuaries along the Indian Ocean. The Amatikulu Nature Reserve also has more than 300 recorded bird species, making it a haven for both the more serious “twitcher” as well as the general birder alike. Here you will find the rare African Finfoot, the Swamp (Natal) Nightjat and the Black Coucal and raptors such as the African Crowned Eagle, African Cuckoo Hawk and Jackal Buzzard. There are also many of the more common and wellknown birds to enjoy, such as the black (yellow-billed) kites, Wooly-necked stork, herons and a variety of beautiful Kingfishers.

Harold Johnson Nature Reserve S 29º 12’ 41.116” E 31º 25’ 11.654” is situated on the banks of the mighty Tugela River. The surrounding area is steeped in historical zulu heritage sites. The Harold Johnson Nature Reserve has more than 200 species of bird and a wonderful variety of indigenous thornveld flora, which attracts more than 114 recorded species of butterfly. Not only does it have a variety of bird species, it also has a fascinating diversity of wildlife including red and grey duiker, bushbuck, antelope and game species.

Lagoons

If Jet-skiing, an easy paddle on your canoe or an evening ride on your boat, is your thing, then you’ve got to sample these lagoons.
